This year, the Philippines marks its 123rd year of independence from Spanish rule with the theme “Kalayaan 2021: Diwa sa Pagkakaisa at paghilom ng Bayan.” Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the country’s first president proclaimed the Philippine independence from Spanish colonial rule in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898.
Why do people celebrate these kinds
of events? Well, the reason is that these special days are an important part of
the people due to it having great historical and cultural importance to them. Celebrating
Independence Day demonstrates extraordinary significance in our social and
political life, it is a way to honor the blood and sweat of our ancestors who
fought for the sake of seeking the freedom of the later generations or in other
words, the time during now. This day carries with it a long history and
celebrating it is all about acknowledging and owning that very history. When we
celebrate our independence, we reflect on the oppression, the horror, and the
aggression against which our ancestors struggled in order to achieve the freedom
that they sought.
Putting aside what I said, all in
all, it is very important to celebrate Independence Day. It is to commemorate the
sacrifices of our ancestors that died fighting for Independence, it evokes the
brave acts of our ancestors. And that exactly is the purpose of this
celebration, which is to acknowledge and memorialize the heroes who fought for
freedom.
